- Swiss Giants Mix is the old-fashioned, open-pollinated pansy, one of the
most useful garden flowers. Plant pansies as edging for a border, or
massed in beds, or use them as a ground cover between roses or tulips.
Pansies prefer cool temps and tolerate frost. Sow in late June or July
for blooms in October and the following Spring. Start in a seed bed and,
before plants become crowded, transplant to a sunny garden spot with rich,
well-drained soil. Never let the seed-bed dry out. Provide shade
during the heat of the day. Where winter cold is severe, cover plants
for the winter (survival is not guaranteed). Pansies can be rooted
easily from the cuttings of side-shoots.
