  • Sweet Pea's vigorous, easy-to-grow climbing vines produce an abundance of bright, fragrant flowers in a rainbow of colors from mid-spring into summer. Vines can be trained on trellises, fences, screens, and light posts.
    Direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. Or sow indoors in peat pots 4 to 6 weeks before planting in the garden in mid-spring. Direct sow in the fall in mild winter areas. Water regularly and fertilize when flowering begins. Cut off faded flowers. Provide climbing support.

  • Nasturtium, Empress of India is a prolific heirloom producing deep crimson flowers and blue-green foliage. The annual plant is easy to grow from seed directly sown in the garden, thrives in full sun and part shade, and is quite compact for a Nasturtium. Olds featured Empress of India in its 1905 catalog through the mid-1920s.
    Select a sunny location and partial shade with ordinary, well-drained soil. Plant seed in a permanent location, after all danger of frost is past. Firm soil over seed. Nasturtium does not like excessive heat. Provide ample water, without over-watering. Seedlings do not transplant well.

  • These low, spreading plants grow quickly with an abundance of flowers. Like its name, the clusters of tiny white flowers will sweeten any garden with fragrance. Excellent for beds, edgings, in-between other flowers, and as accents in containers.
    Sow seeds directly in a sunny location after all danger of frost has passed. For earlier flowers, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost. Lightly rake seed into soil and moisten. Shear plants to keep flowers coming and to prevent legginess. Blooms until frost.

  • These easy-to-grow, hardy plants bear a profusion of dainty bright blue flowers in late spring. Excellent when planted among bulbs and annuals, this old favorite does well planted on the edge of a lawn where it can bloom in spring and be mowed in summer.
    Select a sunny location with filtered sunlight and sow after danger of frost is past, or sow in July for bloom the following spring. Keep soil moist, otherwise plants require no special care. If planted in a lawn, mow after blooms fade in late spring and use no herbicides. Biennials bloom the second year, produce seed and die.

    Select a sunny location or partial shade with ordinary well-drained soil.  Plant seed in a permanent location after all danger from frost is past.  Nasturtiums do not transplant well.  Firm soil over seed.  Nasturtiums don't like excessive heat.  Provide ample water, without overwatering.

    Select a sunny location with well-drained soil of average to low fertility and plant outdoors after last frost. For earlier flowers, start indoors in peat pots, 4-6 weeks before last frost. Cultivate soil and firm over seed, keeping it moist. Soak seeds in water overnight, to hasten germination.
